Srinagar, September 29 (Daily Kiran) : BJP legislators staged a walkout from the Jammu and Kashmir Assembly on Tuesday in protest against a proposal to restore the region’s statehood, which had been passed the previous day. The walkout occurred after the Speaker allowed discussion on the statehood proposal, despite objections raised by the BJP regarding references to a 2000 autonomy proposal and a 2024 special status proposal.
The incident unfolded as opposition leader Sunil Sharma brought the issue back to the assembly floor, demanding the Speaker’s removal. Chief Minister Omar Abdullah introduced the statehood proposal on Monday amid protests from BJP members, who expressed their discontent with the proceedings.
Earlier, the BJP had informed the Speaker that they had submitted a notice to remove Abdul Rahim Rather from his position. In response, Rather stated that he had not read the notice and that any proposal for his removal would be listed after 14 days, following assembly procedures.
Following the notice, BJP legislators moved to the well of the house, staging a mock protest. Despite the chaos, Chief Minister Abdullah delivered a speech in support of the proposal, which was subsequently passed by the assembly.
Interestingly, during his speech, Abdullah revealed that, despite being the Minister of Law and Parliamentary Affairs, he learned that the Law Secretary had sent a letter to the Speaker expressing dissent against the proposal. Abdullah also noted that the Chief Secretary had communicated with the Speaker without his knowledge, highlighting the challenges faced by the region as a Union Territory.
After the proposal’s passage, the assembly secretariat forwarded it to the Chief Secretary for submission to the central government.
