
New Delhi, March 3: The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has released its first list of nine candidates for the upcoming Rajya Sabha elections, including its national president Nitin Naveen.
The party has nominated Nitin Naveen and Shivesh Kumar from Bihar, Terash Gowala and Jogen Mohan from Assam, Lakshmi Verma from Chhattisgarh, Sanjay Bhatia from Haryana, Manmohan Samal and Sujit Kumar from Odisha, and Rahul Sinha from West Bengal.
Earlier, on February 18, the Election Commission of India (ECI) announced the schedule for the biennial elections to fill 37 vacant seats from 10 states in the Rajya Sabha.
According to the ECI, voting will take place on March 16 from 9:00 AM to 4:00 PM, with counting of votes scheduled for the same day at 5:00 PM.
The terms of 37 elected members from 10 states will expire in April 2026. In light of the upcoming vacancies, the commission has prepared a detailed timeline for the electoral process.
The election notification will be issued on February 26, with the last date for filing nominations set for March 5. The scrutiny of nomination papers will take place on March 6.
Candidates will have the option to withdraw their nominations until March 9.
The commission has clarified that only a specific purple pen, provided by the returning officer, will be valid for marking preferences on the ballots. No other writing instruments will be allowed for this purpose.
To ensure a transparent and fair election process, observers will be deployed to monitor the entire procedure.
Members whose terms are expiring represent the states of Maharashtra, Odisha, Tamil Nadu, West Bengal, Assam, Bihar, Chhattisgarh, Haryana, Himachal Pradesh, and Telangana.
The commission emphasized the need to strictly adhere to all election-related guidelines and stressed that the entire process will be completed within the stipulated timeframe to ensure the fairness of the Rajya Sabha elections.
