
New Delhi, June 24: Binoy George has been appointed as India’s new ambassador to Uruguay, located in the southeastern part of South America. The Ministry of External Affairs announced this in a statement.
According to the Ministry, George, an Indian Foreign Service officer from the 2006 batch, is currently serving as Joint Secretary in the Ministry. He will soon take on his new responsibilities in the Oriental Republic of Uruguay.
Before this appointment, Ajneesh Kumar, the Indian Ambassador to Argentina, was managing the ambassadorial duties in Uruguay as part of his concurrent accreditation.
As per the official information from the Ministry of External Affairs, Dr. Binoy George is an experienced diplomat who has held significant roles in various important missions globally. He is presently serving as Joint Secretary (Consular, Passport, Visa – CPV) in New Delhi.
George has also served in Germany, Belgium, Spain, the Netherlands, Sri Lanka, and the European Union. He has previously worked as the Deputy High Commissioner of India in Bangladesh, and has been stationed at the Indian Embassy in Berlin, the Consulate General in Munich, and the Indian Embassy in Bangkok.
The seasoned diplomat has represented India as the Alternate Deputy Permanent Representative (DPR) at the UNESCAP (United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific).
Regarding India-Uruguay relations, they have traditionally been friendly and strong. Diplomatic ties between the two nations were established in 1960, and they recently celebrated 75 years of diplomatic relations.
According to the Indian Embassy in Buenos Aires, there is a significant presence of Indian culture, yoga, and spiritual organizations in Uruguay. The country is home to hundreds of followers of groups like Sai Baba, ISKCON, Art of Living, and Brahma Kumaris. International Yoga Day (IDY) is celebrated here with great enthusiasm, with participation from over 20 yoga schools and hundreds of individuals in 2025. Similarly, Ayurveda Day was celebrated on Dhanvantari Jayanti in 2025.
As part of India’s cultural diplomacy, stamps featuring Mahatma Gandhi and Rabindranath Tagore were issued in Montevideo, along with performances of Indian dance forms like Kathakali and Odissi, and events such as the “Festival of India.”
Under technical and development cooperation, India provides five ITEC scholarships to Uruguay annually, and several Uruguayan diplomats have received training at the Sushma Swaraj Institute of Foreign Service in New Delhi.
In terms of the Indian community, approximately 1,000 Indians reside in Uruguay, with about 500 working at TCS, while others are employed in IT companies and various sectors.
Uruguay is the headquarters of the regional trade organization MERCOSUR, with which India signed a Preferential Trade Agreement in 2004, implemented in 2009, allowing both parties to benefit from reduced tariffs on certain products.
Additionally, efforts to strengthen India’s economic and trade relations continue through platforms like the Latin American Integration Association (ALADI).
