Patna, June 21: The decision by Bihar Chief Minister Samrat Chaudhary to initiate a judicial inquiry into the Ara encounter case is commendable. This move comes in response to the controversy surrounding the incident, aiming to bring forth the truth and clarity.
Mritunjay Kumar Singh, President of the Bihar Police Association, stated that he was invited by top national news channels to participate in discussions regarding the Ara issue. He declined the invitation, emphasizing that, since the matter is now under judicial scrutiny, commenting on it would be inappropriate.
However, he expressed that whenever the police accomplish something noteworthy, the district police superintendent often takes credit during press conferences, presenting himself as the team leader. The SP is usually seen alongside the station officer, inspector, and sub-inspector, while the DSP is seated. The SP is frequently honored by the government or police headquarters for significant achievements, and has even received the President’s Gallantry Medal for leading successful operations against criminals.
It is well-known that any raids or strategic actions against criminals in the district occur under the supervision and direction of the police superintendent. The Ara case has been in the spotlight for two days, and its monitoring is certainly under the SP’s oversight. The DSP and station officer are likely providing real-time updates to the SP and senior officials. In such cases, the SP’s presence is crucial, especially since Bharat Tiwari, who wielded a weapon, has repeatedly called for the SP and DM to be summoned.
We are confident that the judicial inquiry will be impartial and will reveal the truth. If the police are found culpable, all involved officers, including those who directed and monitored the incident, should be held accountable. Conversely, if the encounter is deemed justified, all parties should be considered innocent. Junior police officers and personnel, who risk their lives to maintain law and order in the area, should not become scapegoats in Bihar’s quest for good governance. Both credit and blame should be equally assigned from the district SP down to the junior officers.
Police personnel are integral members of society; they are brothers, sons, fathers, and relatives. They risk their lives in all weather conditions and challenging situations to ensure public safety and uphold the law. The community should also support the police by reporting any criminal activities. A government that promotes justice and development can only thrive through our collective efforts.
Following the announcement of the judicial inquiry, political discussions should cease. Trust in the investigation should prevail, and we must await its results. I believe that the innocent should not be ensnared, and the guilty should not escape justice.
