Patna, February 23: The Bihar Assembly saw a lively discussion on Monday regarding the state’s famous sweets. Legislators mentioned various local delicacies, from renowned laddus to rusk and tilkut, creating a cheerful atmosphere in the house.

During the ongoing budget session, both ruling and opposition members raised the issue of granting Geographical Indication (GI) tags to these iconic sweets. BJP legislator Siyaram Singh highlighted the need for a GI tag for the famous “Khobhiya Lai” from his constituency.

Singh, representing the Baid region, emphasized that Khobhiya Lai is not just a sweet but a cultural identity of the area. He pointed out that many traditional products across the country have gained national and international recognition through GI tags, and Baid’s Lai deserves similar protection and brand value.

In response, Industry Minister Dilip Jayaswal noted that the process of obtaining a GI tag is formal and legal, requiring extensive documentation, historical evidence, and technical studies. He stressed that several products from Bihar have already received GI tags, and further processes will be initiated as needed.

Deputy Chief Minister Vijay Kumar Sinha also joined the conversation, suggesting that if Baid’s Lai is to receive a GI tag, then the famous Rasgulla from Barh should also be honored. He humorously remarked that both sweets are favorites of Minister Dilip Jayaswal, yet efforts for their GI tags have not been made. This sparked laughter in the assembly.

Meanwhile, Assembly Speaker Prem Kumar advocated for a GI tag for Tilkut from Gaya, while Maner legislator Bhai Birendra insisted on the necessity of a GI tag for the famous laddus from Maner.
