Ujjain, September 12 (Daily Kiran) : Early Saturday morning, the Mahakaleshwar Temple in Ujjain witnessed a grand Bhasma Aarti, marking the auspicious Bhadrpad Shukla Paksha Pratipada. A significant number of devotees flocked to the temple to witness this divine ceremony.
As the day began, the temple doors were opened with the sound of drums and trumpets, following the permission of Lord Veerabhadra. The atmosphere transformed as devotees caught their first glimpse of Baba Mahakal, filling the temple with chants of “Jai Shri Mahakal.” The premises resonated with the sounds of bells, conch shells, and the recitation of mantras.
Once the temple gates opened, the rituals commenced with the sacred water abhishekam of Lord Mahakal, using Panchamrit made from milk, yogurt, ghee, honey, and fruit juices. Following the initial rituals, the ceremonial offerings included the ringing of bells and the presentation of holy water. After the camphor aarti, Baba was adorned with a crown, and the Bhasma Aarti was performed accompanied by traditional instruments.
The temple priests led the Mahaarati, and many devotees eagerly participated in the ceremony. Many had queued since the previous night to seek blessings from their beloved deity. It is customary for men to wear traditional dhoti and women to don sarees during the Bhasma Aarti.
According to tradition, the Bhasma Aarti is offered to Baba Mahakal by the Mahanirvani Akhara. It is believed that after the offering of ashes, Baba Mahakal reveals his form to devotees. Each year, countless devotees travel to the sacred city of Ujjain to partake in this spiritual experience.
