Berrettini Dominates Medvedev to Advance at Monte Carlo Masters

Monte Carlo, April 8: Matteo Berrettini, who received a wildcard entry, stunned world number 10 Daniil Medvedev with a commanding 6-0, 6-0 victory in the Monte Carlo Masters, securing his spot in the third round. The match lasted just 49 minutes.

The Italian player maintained complete control throughout the match, while Medvedev struggled significantly. Remarkably, he failed to win a single game point on his serve. This defeat marks the first time the Russian player has lost a tour-level match without winning a game.

Berrettini has now won both of his opening matches in this tournament without dropping a game. In the first round, the 29-year-old had a 4-0 lead when Roberto Bautista Agut withdrew due to injury.

This victory is particularly significant for the former world number 6, as it is his first win against a top-10 player since defeating Alexander Zverev at the same tournament last year. It is also the first time Berrettini has achieved a 6-0, 6-0 victory at the tour level.

Medvedev, who was playing his first clay-court match of the year after winning titles in Dubai and Brisbane, struggled to find his rhythm. He committed 27 unforced errors in this lopsided contest. With this win, Berrettini improved his head-to-head record against Medvedev to 1-3. He will face either Joao Sousa or Arthur Rinderknech in the next round.

After the match, Berrettini expressed, “I think this was one of the best performances of my life. I only missed three shots throughout the match, which is not easy against a tough player like Daniil. I faced two break points in the first game, and after that, I felt I was playing better than him. I didn’t expect to win 6-0, but I stayed focused because I know that sometimes one or two breaks aren’t enough, so I kept pushing. Having played for a long time, I felt it was crucial to hold my serve at the start of the second set.”
