Kolkata, September 11 (Daily Kiran) : West Bengal Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari announced on Friday that the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) is set to launch a major project in the state. During a press interaction, he revealed that Junput, located in his home district of East Midnapore, has been chosen as the site for this initiative. However, he refrained from providing further details about the project.
The announcement came during the inauguration of a clothing store outlet in Salt Lake, a northern suburb of Kolkata. “I can only say that a significant DRDO project will soon commence in Junput. I will elaborate on this matter later,” Adhikari stated.
Historically, the East Midnapore district has faced challenges in securing large investments due to local opposition, which was politically supported during previous Left Front and Trinamool Congress (TMC) governments. A proposed nuclear energy project failed to materialize during the tenure of the late Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee due to local protests organized by the TMC, which was the main opposition party at the time.
In 2024, another DRDO project in Junput was halted due to joint protests from the Indian National Trinamool Trade Union Congress (the TMC’s trade union branch) and local fishermen’s groups.
During the clothing store opening, Adhikari also emphasized the state government‘s commitment to attracting significant investments to improve the economy and create jobs. He noted that potential investors would undergo thorough background checks before being allowed to invest in West Bengal. “We will verify the credibility and background of interested investors, particularly checking for any involvement in money laundering activities and any cases filed against them by central investigative agencies. We will also examine bank guarantees,” he added.
