Sangrur, September 11 (Daily Kiran) : Amarinder Singh Raja Wading, the President of the Punjab Congress, visited the family of Gulzar Singh in Sangrur on September 11, 2026. During his visit, he strongly criticized the Bhagwant Mann-led government for its handling of the drug crisis in the state. Wading asserted that Punjab has become increasingly mired in substance abuse, with conditions deteriorating fourfold.
He alleged that the family had been misled into holding a funeral and warned that if there were any attempts to pressure them, Rahul Gandhi would personally come to Sangrur. “This issue is extremely serious. Punjab is suffering from addiction. Five to six years ago, Rahul Gandhi pointed out that the state was sinking into this quagmire,” Wading said. He noted that the government had previously claimed it would take action against drug dealers but later retracted those statements.
Wading emphasized that the situation has worsened significantly. “People are in dire straits. Gulzar Singh went to seek help from Harpal Singh Cheema not for a job, but to find his child. That child is still missing, and now Gulzar Singh is gone as well,” he lamented. He expressed frustration that if Rahul Gandhi comments on this situation, it is labeled as political maneuvering, stating, “If this is politics, then the Congress will continue to engage in it.”
He also mentioned that the family had received some financial assistance, but lamented that the conditions in Punjab are shameful. “We once lived in a Punjab that was like a golden bird, and now we face this reality,” he said. Wading criticized the state government, suggesting that if leaders do not listen to the victims’ families now, they might face backlash later.
He concluded by stating that if any attempts are made to intimidate the family, Rahul Gandhi would be ready to visit. “We are here to support the victims, and we will continue to do so,” he affirmed.
