Chandigarh, September 11 (Daily Kiran) : Sukhbir Singh Badal, the president of the Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD), met with the family of Gulzar Singh on Friday, pledging to provide them with all possible assistance following a tragic incident. Gulzar Singh took his own life after facing threats from a local panchayat and pressure to apologize to Punjab’s Finance Minister, Harpal Cheema, over the rampant sale of synthetic drugs.
During the visit, Gulzar’s son, Lakhwinder, recounted the events leading to his father’s death, detailing how Punjab police forcibly conducted the cremation under directives from the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) government. He expressed anguish over the family’s inability to see Gulzar in his final moments, stating they were not allowed to perform last rites according to their wishes.
Lakhwinder claimed, “We were not even permitted to say our final prayers, and Gulzar’s mother, wife, and children were denied the chance to bid farewell.”
Badal expressed shock and anger at the revelations, emphasizing that the family has suffered unimaginable pain at the hands of a heartless government that seems more concerned with protecting Finance Minister Cheema, whom he holds responsible for Gulzar’s death. He noted that Gulzar had named Cheema in his dying declaration, indicating that police must file charges for inciting suicide.
“I assured Lakhwinder that the SAD will pursue this matter to its logical conclusion, providing them with legal, financial, and social support to help them recover from the trauma and indignity inflicted by the AAP government,” Badal stated. He also stressed that officials who mistreat the families of suicide victims must be held accountable for their actions.
“No one has the right to trample on the rights of a grieving family in this manner. Those responsible for humiliating Gulzar and pushing him to suicide must face justice,” he added. Badal asserted that accountability should begin at the highest levels and involve all guilty parties.
