Kolkata, May 23: Bengal Minister Agnimitra Paul has raised serious questions regarding alleged illegal constructions linked to Kolkata Municipal Corporation Mayor Firhad Hakim and TMC leader Abhishek Banerjee.
During an interview with a news agency, Paul stated that an investigation into these illegal constructions is necessary. She questioned why Mayor Hakim has not addressed these issues over the past 15 years, emphasizing that it is his responsibility along with his team.
Referring to a tragic incident at the ‘Wow Momo’ factory, she noted that the facility was built on encroached water bodies without any fire license, resulting in multiple fatalities. Paul expressed her dismay that former Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has never visited the site and demanded accountability from the TMC leaders.
Paul asserted that in five years, their government would need to provide answers. She highlighted the absence of fire and trade licenses for the constructions, questioning how homes were built without proper planning and permission. She urged Mayor Hakim to resign if he chooses but insisted that the people of Bengal deserve answers.
In response to TMC MP Abhishek Banerjee’s statements, Paul mentioned that the KMC had already issued a notice to him. She criticized Banerjee for previously dismissing the notice as fake and questioned his belief that he is above the law. Paul claimed that for 15 years, Banerjee operated without accountability, but that era is over.
With a pointed remark, she challenged Banerjee to engage in dialogue and fulfill his responsibilities, warning that if he continues to avoid accountability, action will be necessary.
