Over 7 Million Income Tax Returns Filed for Assessment Year 2026-27

New Delhi, August 28: The Income Tax Department announced on Friday that over 7 million income tax returns (ITRs) have been filed for the assessment year (AY) 2026-27. The department urged taxpayers with business or professional income, who are not required to have their accounts audited, to file their returns promptly.

In a post shared on the social media platform X, the Income Tax Department stated that the deadline for these taxpayers to submit their ITRs is August 31, 2026.

The department emphasized, “More than 7 million ITRs have already been filed for the assessment year 2026-27.” Eligible taxpayers are advised not to wait until the last minute and to file their returns as soon as possible.

The post further noted, “August 31, 2026, is the deadline for taxpayers with business or professional income who are not subject to audit. Do not wait until the last moment; file your return today.”

This appeal comes as the deadline approaches for non-audit category business and professional taxpayers.

Typically, there is increased traffic and technical pressure on the portal during the final days, prompting the department to stress timely filing of returns.

Earlier in July, the Income Tax Department reported that over 5.9 million ITRs had been filed by the deadline of July 31, 2026. At that time, the department thanked taxpayers, stating that timely compliance and taxpayer trust contribute to the country’s development.

According to the department, more than 4 million returns were filed on the final day of the July deadline. This was the deadline for individual taxpayers and entities not required to have their accounts audited.

Recent figures show that even after the July deadline, a significant number of business and professional income taxpayers have filed their returns, bringing the total to over 7 million. The Income Tax Department believes that the expansion of digital systems and online filing facilities is continuously improving tax compliance.
