New Delhi, July 18: The Secretary of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), Devjeet Saikia, has put an end to the ongoing speculation regarding Rohit Sharma’s future in One Day Internationals (ODIs). Saikia confirmed that the upcoming third and final ODI against England at Lord’s will not mark the end of Sharma’s ODI career.
Recently, rumors circulated suggesting that the last match of the ODI series against England could be Rohit Sharma’s final appearance in ODIs. However, the BCCI Secretary dismissed these claims as mere conjecture.
Saikia stated, “There are various discussions about Rohit Sharma’s future. There has been no such conversation at the board level. I want to make it clear that there has been no discussion about Rohit playing his last match at Lord’s on Sunday.”
He emphasized that Rohit remains a regular member of the Indian ODI team and will continue to represent the country as long as he is part of the squad. The match at Lord’s will not signify the conclusion of Rohit Sharma’s ODI career.
Notably, Rohit has expressed his desire to play until the ODI World Cup in 2027. However, he has struggled to make significant contributions in the first two matches of the current series against England, scoring only 11 runs in the first match and 26 runs in the second.
Following India’s defeat in the second ODI held in Cardiff, the team’s batting coach, Sitanshu Kotak, also voiced his support for Rohit. He remarked that a player of Rohit’s caliber should not feel pressured regarding performance or future prospects.
Kotak added that Rohit is an exceptional player, and his lack of runs in the initial two matches does not diminish his capabilities. He noted that it seemed Rohit was poised for a big innings in the second ODI, but it did not materialize.
