Dhaka, 5 January – The Bangladesh government has imposed an indefinite ban on the telecast of the Indian Premier League (IPL) amid the controversy surrounding fast bowler Mustafizur Rahman.
Mustafizur was released from the IPL after instructions from the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), a decision that has sparked significant unrest in Bangladesh, especially in the backdrop of increasing atrocities against Hindus in the country.
In an official statement, Bangladesh’s Ministry of Information and Broadcasting said, “We have come to know of an order issued by the BCCI directing the release of Bangladesh’s star cricketer Mustafizur Rahman from the Kolkata Knight Riders team for the IPL starting 26 March 2026. No valid reason has been provided for this decision. This has caused sadness, trouble, and anger among Bangladeshis. Under such circumstances, until further notice, the broadcast and telecast of all IPL matches and related programmes are suspended.”
A former BCCI official described Bangladesh Cricket Board’s (BCB) move as a natural reaction. The official stated, “Every action has a reaction. The BCB is acting within its jurisdiction. If there is hurt, there will naturally be a response. However, this decision by Bangladesh is unlikely to affect India or the IPL.”
The Men’s T20 World Cup 2026 is scheduled to be co-hosted by India and Bangladesh. Bangladesh is set to play three matches at Eden Gardens, Kolkata — against West Indies on 7 February, Italy on 9 February, and England on 14 February — followed by a match against Nepal at Mumbai’s Wankhede Stadium.
Following Mustafizur’s release from KKR, the BCB convened an emergency board meeting and cited security concerns while reaching out to the International Cricket Council (ICC) to consider shifting Bangladesh’s matches in the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026 away from India.
