Bangladesh Announces Womens T20 Squad Against Sri Lanka, Includes Sharmeen Sultana

Dhaka, April 25: Bangladesh has announced a 15-member women’s team for the upcoming T20 series against Sri Lanka. Top-order batter Sharmeen Sultana has been included in the squad, while Fargana Haque has been dropped.

Sharmeen has yet to make her T20 international debut. Earlier this year, she was recalled to the ODI team after a long break, but her performance has been average, scoring only 42 runs in three matches. Despite this, selectors have decided to retain her in the squad as Bangladesh aims to strengthen its top order ahead of crucial matches in the T20 format. This series is part of the preparation for the Women’s T20 World Cup.

The team announcement came after the conclusion of the ODI phase of the home series in Rajshahi, where Sri Lanka won the three-match series 2-1. Following inconsistent performances in the ODI format, Bangladesh will focus on regrouping and addressing its weaknesses, particularly in batting.

The batting department will heavily rely on captain Nigar Sultana, supported by Shobhana Mostary and Sharmeen Akhtar, all of whom showed promising form during the ODI series.

On the bowling front, the Bangladesh team appears well-balanced. Young fast bowler Marufa Akhtar will lead the bowling attack with the new ball, while left-arm pacer Fariha Trishna could play a crucial role, especially on the fast pitches of Sylhet.

The spin department will once again be led by vice-captain Nahida Akhtar, alongside Rabia Khan, Sultana Khatun, and Fahima Khatun.

This T20 series is particularly significant as it is expected to be Bangladesh’s final tournament before they depart for the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup, starting June 12 in England. The team previously qualified for the World Cup by winning all seven matches in the qualifying tournament held in Nepal.

Bangladesh Women’s T20 Squad Against Sri Lanka: Nigar Sultana (Captain), Nahida Akhtar (Vice-Captain), Dilara Akhtar, Shobhana Mostary, Fahima Khatun, Sharmeen Akhtar, Ritu Moni, Shorna Akhtar, Rabia Khan, Sharmeen Sultana, Marufa Akhtar, Fariha Trishna, Sultana Khatun, Sanjida Akhtar Meghla, Juairia Firdaus.
