Hyderabad, February 18: In the recent municipal elections in Telangana, backward classes have won over 61% of the seats.
Despite 28.22% of wards and 35.25% of municipal divisions being reserved, backward classes managed to secure 61% of the wards and divisions.
G. Niranjan, chairman of the Backward Classes Commission, along with members Rapolu Jayaprakash, Tirumalagiri Surendra, and Balalakshmi Rangu, expressed their happiness over the significant victories for backward classes. They noted that this reflects a growing awareness within these communities.
The elections for 116 municipalities and seven municipal corporations were held on February 11, with results announced on February 13.
In the recent panchayat elections, backward class candidates won 52.75% of the seats, including those from the general category.
They expressed hope that in the upcoming elections for Zilla Parishad Territorial Constituencies (ZPTC), Mandal Parishad Territorial Constituencies (MPTC), Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC), and other corporations, backward classes will achieve significant victories.
A comprehensive survey conducted in the state revealed that backward classes constitute 56.33% of the population.
Although the state assembly has passed a bill providing 42% reservation for backward classes, it is still pending approval from the central government.
The chairman and members of the Backward Classes Commission mentioned that some individuals have approached the courts to halt the implementation of the 42% reservation.
In light of the seats won by backward classes in the recent panchayat and municipal elections, the commission urges the central government to include the 42% reservation in the Ninth Schedule for implementation.
They also request those who have filed cases in courts to withdraw their petitions to facilitate the smooth implementation of the 42% reservation.
