Avalanche Strands Vehicles Near Zoji La Pass in Ladakh, No Casualties Reported

Srinagar, March 27: Authorities reported that a significant avalanche occurred on Friday at the Ladakh section of the Zoji La Pass along the Srinagar-Leh highway, trapping several vehicles. Fortunately, there have been no reports of injuries or fatalities.

The avalanche struck early Friday morning, causing multiple passenger vehicles to become stuck in the debris. Emergency services have since initiated a rescue and cleanup operation to clear the highway and restore traffic.

Currently, the Srinagar-Leh highway (NH-1, formerly NH-1D) is a crucial two-lane road spanning 434 kilometers, connecting Srinagar to Leh in Ladakh. Renowned for its altitude and stunning views, this highway traverses the Zoji La Pass, which stands at an elevation of 11,575 feet.

A tunnel is under construction above the Zoji La Pass. Once operational, it will provide year-round safe connectivity between the Union Territory of Ladakh and the rest of the country.

This tunnel will run beneath the Zoji La Pass, linking Sonamarg in the Ganderbal district of Jammu and Kashmir to Dras in Ladakh’s Kargil district.

The tunnel is designed as a single-tube, two-lane road, measuring 9.5 meters in width, 7.57 meters in height, and 14.2 kilometers in length, situated at an elevation of approximately 12,000 feet above sea level.

Together with the already operational Z-Mor tunnel, this strategically important project on the Srinagar-Leh highway will ensure weather-resistant connectivity throughout the year, boosting tourism and the economy while enhancing logistical support for the Indian armed forces.

This is one of 31 road tunnels being constructed at a total cost of ₹1.4 lakh crore, with 20 located in Jammu and Kashmir and 11 in Ladakh. Upon completion, it will become the longest tunnel in Asia.
