Kolkata, April 29: A severe attack on a Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) booth agent occurred in Nadia district just before the second and final phase of the West Bengal Assembly elections. The agent was brutally assaulted with a gun butt, sticks, and rods, resulting in serious head injuries. BJP candidate Saikat Sarkar has accused Trinamool Congress (TMC) supporters of the attack.
According to Saikat Sarkar, the BJP candidate from the Chapra Assembly constituency, the incident took place around 6 AM as the booth agent was heading to the polling station, accompanied by other party members. During this time, TMC candidate Mafidul’s goons attacked him with a gun butt, sticks, and rods.
Sarkar reported that the booth agent sustained head injuries and was rushed to the hospital. He further alleged that the TMC candidate is attempting to intimidate voters, with Mafidul and others involved in such acts.
The BJP candidate urged the Election Commission and local administration to arrest these criminals and ensure that the elections are conducted freely and fairly. He emphasized the need for voter safety, stating, “There should be no incidents throughout the day after the morning’s occurrence.”
Notably, the second phase of voting is taking place for 142 Assembly seats, including Chapra. The TMC has fielded Jebar Sheikh as its candidate, while Congress has nominated Asif Khan. A total of nine candidates are contesting in this constituency.
Voting commenced at 7 AM across all 142 seats, with results for the state assembly elections set to be announced on May 4.
