New Delhi, May 27: Union Home Minister Amit Shah congratulated the people of Assam on Wednesday following the passage of the Uniform Civil Code (UCC) bill in the state assembly. This legislation aims to establish a uniform legal framework for all citizens concerning marriage, divorce, separation, inheritance, property division, and live-in relationships.
Under the leadership of Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, the BJP government successfully passed the UCC Bill-2026 in the assembly. With this, Assam becomes the third state in the country and the first in the Northeast to implement the UCC, following Uttarakhand and Gujarat. Despite opposition demands to send the bill to a select committee and ensuing protests, it received approval from the house.
Home Minister Amit Shah extended his congratulations to the state government and its citizens, stating, “I congratulate Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma and all legislators who supported this bill.”
He expressed his sentiments on the social media platform X, saying, “Congratulations to the people of Assam. The Uniform Civil Code has been a commitment of the BJP since its inception. Under Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s leadership, BJP-ruled states are establishing equal laws for every citizen.”
Shah emphasized the Modi government’s dedication to implementing the principle of equality before the law across the nation.
Additionally, Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami congratulated his Assam counterpart. He remarked that the passage of the UCC law in the Assam assembly is a historic step towards a developed, inclusive, and empowered India.
Dhami noted that the UCC initiative, which originated in Uttarakhand, is now progressing throughout the country under Prime Minister Modi‘s visionary leadership, contributing to the realization of Dr. B.R. Ambedkar’s dream of a nation founded on equality and justice.
It is noteworthy that the BJP included the UCC as a key electoral promise ahead of the 2026 Assam assembly elections. Earlier this month, the state cabinet approved the draft of the UCC in its first meeting.
The UCC law will implement a uniform civil legal system for all citizens of the state. It will ensure equal treatment in matters such as marriage, live-in relationships, inheritance, and property. The bill also prohibits polygamy and multiple marriages, while making the registration of live-in relationships mandatory.
Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma described this law as a “historic” step and expressed gratitude to all assembly members. He stated, “Today, the Assam assembly has passed the Uniform Civil Code Bill-2026. I thank all members of the house for adopting this historic law.”
The Chief Minister mentioned that the bill will first be sent to the Governor of Assam and then forwarded to the President for final approval.
