Assam Minister Criticizes Congress for Failing Rhino Conservation

Guwahati, August 19: Assam’s Agriculture Minister, Piyush Hazarika, launched a strong attack on the Congress party regarding the conservation of Kaziranga National Park. During a press conference on Wednesday, he accused Congress of failing to protect one-horned rhinos during its tenure, while now expressing concern for Kaziranga’s preservation.

Hazarika urged Congress to clarify its past record on wildlife conservation. He also questioned the understanding of environmental regulations among Congress leaders.

“The same Congress that harmed rhinos and destroyed Kaziranga is now talking about its protection,” Hazarika stated.

He targeted a Congress leader who studied abroad, claiming that the individual does not even understand the difference between eco-sensitive zones (ESZ) and economically sensitive zones.

The Assam minister demanded that Congress outline its plans for activism regarding Kaziranga. He also urged them to inform the people of Assam about their historical record in rhino conservation.

Hazarika was in Diphu to participate in various government and public events. He held a review meeting with senior officials from various departments, including agriculture and irrigation, at the Kazi Ronghangpi Guest House conference room.

Later, addressing an agricultural industry event at the Sertalin Auditorium, the minister provided information about various government-operated agricultural loan schemes. He encouraged farmers in Karbi Anglong to effectively utilize these schemes to strengthen their livelihoods and become more economically self-reliant.

Hazarika announced that development plans worth at least ₹400 crore would be implemented in Karbi Anglong and West Karbi Anglong over the next five years. He also shared plans to plant five lakh fruit-bearing plants annually in each of the five assembly constituencies of both hilly districts.

The review meeting also discussed the potential expansion of palm oil and fox nut cultivation to diversify agriculture and increase farmers’ additional income in Karbi Anglong and West Karbi Anglong.
