Assam Government Seeks Support to Preserve Bhupen Hazarikas Historic Home in Kolkata

Kolkata, September 8 (Daily Kiran) : The Assam government is taking significant steps to preserve the legacy of Bharat Ratna Dr. Bhupen Hazarika. Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has reached out to West Bengal‘s Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari, requesting assistance in acquiring and safeguarding Hazarika’s historic residence in Kolkata.

In a post on the social media platform X, Sarma highlighted the importance of Kolkata in Hazarika’s life, noting that many of his memorable songs were created in his Tollygunge home. “We want to preserve this heritage for future generations,” he stated, emphasizing Assam’s commitment to maintaining Hazarika’s legacy.

In his letter, Sarma pointed out the cultural and historical significance of the property located at 77B Golf Club Road, Tollygunge, where Hazarika spent a substantial part of his creative life. He expressed the emotional connection that the people of Assam have with this site and conveyed the government’s keen interest in purchasing the house to designate it as a heritage property.

Sarma also referenced the ongoing year-long centenary celebrations of Hazarika’s birth. He urged Adhikari to personally intervene in this matter, considering Hazarika’s immense cultural contributions to both Assam and West Bengal, and the importance of fostering cultural ties between the two states.
