Balaghat, October 2 (Daily Kiran) : Congress party leaders are raising concerns over a potential security breach during Rahul Gandhi’s visit to Balaghat on October 1. Jitu Patwari, the president of the Madhya Pradesh Congress, has written to Union Home Minister Amit Shah, urging an investigation into the alleged lapses in security and protocol.
The issue was highlighted just hours before Shah’s visit to Bhopal. Patwari questioned the involvement of local authorities and police during Gandhi’s event in Jagla village, pointing out that neither the district collector nor the superintendent of police was present, despite prior knowledge of the program.
He referenced a letter from the Balaghat police sent on September 29 to local Congress leader Sanjay Uike. The letter requested details about expected crowd sizes, volunteers, parking arrangements, traffic management, and a list of individuals meeting with Gandhi. It also noted that the area is sensitive and has a history of Naxalite activity.
During a press conference in Bhopal, Patwari stated that the police’s prior knowledge of the event raises serious questions about the absence of district officials. He has called on the Union Home Ministry for a factual report on the matter and requested written clarification from the Madhya Pradesh government regarding the absence of the district collector and police chief.
Patwari further inquired whether a duty chart for the collector and SP was issued for Gandhi’s visit, whether any officer was formally authorized to assume their responsibilities, and if prior permission was obtained for this arrangement. He also sought information about the advance security liaison meetings held in relation to the visit.
He emphasized that this issue should not be viewed merely as a political dispute but as a serious matter concerning public safety and administrative preparedness during a high-profile visit. Patwari reminded that government officials are accountable to the public and must uphold the Constitution and the law. He urged the Home Minister to review all security and protocol documents related to Gandhi’s visit and take action if any violations are confirmed.
During his visit, Rahul Gandhi met with tribal families in Jagla village who have suffered from illness and malnutrition, addressing critical issues related to health, education, compensation, and basic amenities.
Patwari concluded by calling for clear and uniform protocols for future visits by the Leader of the Opposition and other high-ranking officials.
