Assam Cabinet Expansion: 12 Ministers Sworn In Following NDA Victory

Guwahati, June 5: Following a significant victory in the recent assembly elections, Assam Governor Laxman Prasad Acharya administered the oath of office to 12 ministers in Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma’s cabinet on Friday. This marks the completion of the formation of the new state government.

The oath-taking ceremony took place at the Srimanta Sankardev Kalakshetra in Guwahati, attended by Chief Minister Sarma, senior BJP leaders, legislators, and government officials.

Among the 12 legislators who took the oath as cabinet ministers are Ashwini Rai Sarkar, Ashok Singhal, Bimal Borah, Biswajit Daimary, Jayanta Malla Barua, Kaushik Rai, Keshav Mahanta, Krishnendu Paul, Neelima Devi, Piyush Hazarika, Ranajoy Pegoo, and Sushant Borgohain.

With this new expansion, the council of ministers has increased to 17 members, including Chief Minister Sarma and four ministers who had previously taken their oaths: Ajanta Neog, Rameshwar Teli, Atul Bora, and Charan Boro.

The structure of the new cabinet reflects a blend of continuity and change. The BJP leadership has retained several experienced ministers from the previous government while also incorporating new faces.

Senior leaders such as Ashok Singhal, Piyush Hazarika, Jayanta Malla Barua, Ranajoy Pegoo, Bimal Borah, and AGP leader Keshav Mahanta have maintained their positions in the cabinet, showcasing the party’s trust in their administrative experience.

Newcomers Ashwini Rai Sarkar, Biswajit Daimary, Neelima Devi, and Sushant Borgohain have joined the council for the first time. Daimary previously served as the Speaker of the Assam Legislative Assembly. The new cabinet also sees the departure of some ministers from the last government, including Chandra Mohan Patowary, Jogen Mohan, and Urkhao Gwra Brahma.

Former minister Ranjit Kumar Das has been appointed as the Speaker of the Assembly.

Political analysts believe that the cabinet formation aims to maintain administrative continuity while enhancing regional and social representation within the government. This cabinet was established after Sarma took office as Chief Minister for the second consecutive time following the NDA’s decisive victory in the 2026 Assam Assembly elections.
