Guwahati, April 5: A significant milestone has been achieved in the preparations for the Assam Assembly elections in 2026. The office of the Chief Electoral Officer of Assam announced today that the commissioning process for electronic voting machines (EVMs) has been successfully completed across all 126 assembly constituencies in the state.
This commissioning work took place from March 31 to April 4, 2026, at designated facilities notified by the respective district electoral officers. The entire process was conducted in the presence of candidates and their authorized representatives, ensuring complete transparency and strict adherence to the Election Commission’s guidelines.
Engineers and technical staff from Electronics Corporation of India Limited (ECIL) played a crucial role in ensuring the accuracy, reliability, and proper configuration of the machines. They conducted thorough testing of each machine and appropriately prepared the candidate sets.
During the commissioning, a total of 41,320 ballot units (BUs), 43,975 control units (CUs), and 43,997 VVPAT machines were activated. This includes reserve machines that will be available for use at any of Assam’s 31,490 polling stations if needed. This number is considered sufficient to ensure smooth voting in the state.
The Chief Electoral Officer’s office stated that the successful completion of EVM commissioning marks a significant milestone in the election preparations. This process reflects the Election Commission’s unwavering commitment to conducting free, fair, and fully transparent elections. The presence of candidates and their representatives fostered an atmosphere of trust throughout the campaign.
Voting for the Assam Assembly elections 2026 is scheduled to take place in a single phase on April 9, 2026, with the counting of votes proposed for May 4, 2026. The use of the EVM-VVPAT system will make the voting process more reliable and efficient.
The Election Commission has instructed all relevant officials to ensure that the machines are stored securely after commissioning and that strict security protocols are followed. Political parties have also been provided with complete information regarding the commissioning process.
