Mumbai, September 8 (Daily Kiran) : Congress legislator Harish Chaudhary has voiced concerns about the ongoing caste census process during a recent dialogue in Mumbai. In response to Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s comments and Rahul Gandhi’s program in Indore, Chaudhary stressed the necessity for changes in how caste information is recorded. He argued that merely discussing caste census in slogans is insufficient; a practical and effective system must be established on the ground.
Chaudhary highlighted the need for clarity and improvement in the questions posed during the census. He pointed out that while there are classifications for Scheduled Castes (SC) and Scheduled Tribes (ST), similar provisions should be made for Other Backward Classes (OBC) and various castes. Accurate documentation and data collection for each caste are crucial. The Congress party demands that the experiences from caste censuses conducted in Telangana and Bihar be utilized to develop a comprehensive system across the country. With the census process yet to commence in all states, he urged the government to make timely improvements.
During the conversation, Chaudhary also criticized Prime Minister Modi’s “angry uncle” comment made in Vadodara. He emphasized that the position of Prime Minister is a constitutional and dignified role, requiring careful choice of words. Students across the country wish to communicate their issues and expectations to the Prime Minister, but instead, they are met with trivial remarks. Modi should focus on addressing the genuine concerns of students.
Chaudhary also targeted the government regarding the alleged denial of permission for Rahul Gandhi’s “Students’ Voice” program in Indore. He accused the central government and BJP-ruled states of attempting to silence the voices of the people, including in Indore.
He stated that if students are denied access to a stadium for their event, they can gather elsewhere to express their views. The program aims to provide a platform for students to voice their problems and ideas, focusing on their concerns rather than political issues. Chaudhary questioned how providing a platform for students to express themselves could be deemed wrong. He noted that student unity could effectively counter any attempts to suppress their voices, referencing the impact of the student protests at Jantar Mantar, which he claimed influenced government intentions.
In response to BJP’s characterization of “Students’ Voice” as a mere echo of falsehood and Modi’s comments on generational issues, Chaudhary remarked that similar claims had been made previously regarding Jantar Mantar. He referenced Modi’s social media interactions with students, suggesting that the Prime Minister later engaged directly with youth on these platforms. It is essential to understand young people’s emotions and concerns beyond mere statistics and social media reach; their real issues must be acknowledged.
