Ashwin Advocates for ETPLs Role in Developing European Cricket Talent

New Delhi, July 2: Former Indian spinner Ravichandran Ashwin believes that the European T20 Premier League (ETPL) should focus on developing players from Ireland, Scotland, and the Netherlands by providing them with consistent exposure to high-level T20 cricket. He emphasizes the need to prepare the sport for a larger global stage.

Following the ETPL 2026 player draft, Ashwin, who serves as the captain and mentor of the Dublin Guardians, stated that the league will play a crucial role in the global expansion of cricket ahead of its return to the Olympic Games.

Ashwin noted the tournament’s potential impact, saying, “I think there will be an Olympics in a few years. If cricket is serious about becoming a global sport, ETPL teams will play a vital role in making that happen.” The Dublin Guardians have also taken on the responsibility of contributing to Irish cricket and the broader European ecosystem.

He expressed excitement about the possibilities, stating, “We not only believe we can select a team and perform well in this tournament, but we can also create an environment where these players can improve and have a lasting impact on the tournament. We aim to contribute to the Dublin franchise and Irish cricket in various ways, empowering them with the right exposure and opportunities.”

Ashwin mentioned that he and co-owner Rahul Dravid have been aligned from the beginning on making local talent the centerpiece of the franchise. “It’s really about Scottish, Dutch, and Irish players. We want to build this around them. Rahul and I have been very clear about this from day one, and we will stick to that specific formula.”

He further added that the Dublin Guardians aim to foster an environment where players continuously improve through learning and responsibility. “We will create a culture where cricketers strive to progress at least 1 percent every day.”

When asked how ETPL can further assist the development of players from emerging cricket nations in Europe following Ireland’s recent strides in international cricket, Ashwin highlighted the importance of allowing these players to share dressing rooms with experienced professionals.

“I believe that for professionals coming from other countries, you play a crucial role in enhancing your knowledge. You also learn how they respond to their work methods, practice, and failures. When they succeed, how do they maintain their balance?” he explained.

According to Ashwin, “Exposure to high-level and pressure situations is something that many associate players currently lack, making ETPL an ideal environment for learning. All these factors will be very beneficial for those who do not play high-level tournaments every year. I am confident that ETPL will be a better platform for local cricketers.”

The former Indian bowling great expressed his eagerness for the ETPL to commence.
