Jaipur, April 6: Former Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot has criticized the Bhajanlal government for delays in modernizing the historic Sumer Library in Jodhpur. He accused the government of lacking genuine intent to promote education and public awareness.
In a video released under his campaign “Intzar Shastra: Chapter 15,” Gehlot stated that the Congress government envisioned transforming the Sumer Library into a high-tech e-library equipped with modern facilities. While the building is ready, he claims the BJP government is stalling progress due to a lack of commitment.
Gehlot pointed out that the Sumer Library has become a victim of the BJP government’s shortsightedness. The impressive building, constructed at a cost of ₹7.96 crores, remains closed to the public because the budget for furniture and finishing has been halted, effectively locking out the future of the youth.
He questioned, “Why does the BJP shy away from education and knowledge?” Established in 1935, the Sumer Library was originally located in the old Sumer building at Umaid Garden in Jodhpur. During the 2022-23 period, over ₹7 crores were allocated for the construction of the new building.
Although the infrastructure, digitization, and e-library facilities are reportedly complete, the library has yet to open to the public due to pending internal arrangements. Gehlot emphasized that such delays deprive the public, especially students and young readers, of vital learning resources. He urged the government to expedite the remaining work and make the facility operational as soon as possible.
“It seems the BJP government does not want the public to become aware through reading and writing,” he added. Gehlot has launched a social media series titled “Intzar Shastra” to highlight the shortcomings of the state government led by Chief Minister Bhajanlal Sharma.
