Mumbai, April 10: BJP MP Daggubati Purandeswari addressed the Women’s Reservation Bill in Mumbai, stating that it has been long overdue and is now moving forward, representing a major step towards women’s empowerment.
She noted that the participation of women in the country began long ago, particularly after the 73rd and 74th Constitutional Amendments, which established a 33% reservation for women in local bodies. At that time, it was hoped that women would play a genuine leadership role, not just in name. However, in the initial phases, many women were elected, but their work was often overshadowed by male family members, especially husbands. Today, the situation has changed.
Purandeswari emphasized that women have become more self-reliant and empowered than ever before. In many areas, women’s participation has increased from 33% to as high as 50%. This indicates that women are not just representing others but are also making decisions and establishing their identities. With women constituting half of the country’s population, equal opportunities are essential for the nation’s overall development. Therefore, the Women’s Reservation Bill is crucial to enhance women’s participation in politics and policymaking. She questioned those opposing the bill, asking if they do not wish to see women progress.
She believes that whenever women have taken on leadership roles, they have proven their capabilities. She cited examples of past female Prime Ministers and Presidents in India, including the current President, Droupadi Murmu, who hails from a humble tribal background yet has reached the highest office in the country. This serves as proof that women are capable in any field.
Purandeswari praised the initiatives and policies of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s government, highlighting various programs that have directly benefited women. She mentioned the construction of toilets under the Swachh Bharat Abhiyan, which has significantly improved women’s dignity and safety.
She also referred to the Jan Dhan Yojana, noting that women previously kept their savings at home, but now they are becoming more financially empowered through bank accounts. Programs like the Maternity Benefit Scheme and the Jeevan Jyoti Bima Yojana have provided women with security and confidence. Previously, women faced economic and social insecurity, but the government has worked to provide them with a safe framework. She added that Prime Minister Modi has emphasized making women not just beneficiaries but partners in development.
