New Delhi, February 8: Delhi police arrested a second suspect on Sunday in connection with the death of a biker who fell into an open pit in Janakpuri, West Delhi. The suspect was located in Firozabad, Uttar Pradesh, according to an official.
The arrested individual, Yogesh, is identified as a supervisor at the site located on Joginder Singh Marg.
According to police, he was allegedly present near the pit associated with a Delhi Jal Board (DJB) project when 25-year-old biker Kamal Dhyani from Kailashpuri fell and died on Thursday night.
Investigators suspect that Yogesh was aware of the incident but failed to report it for rescue efforts and fled the scene.
In a related incident, Rajesh Prajapati, a subcontractor for the project, was remanded to one day of police custody by a Delhi court on Sunday. When presenting the accused at Dwarka court, police requested a three-day remand; however, the court granted only one day.
Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta took a strong stance on the biker’s death, ordering all departments to take immediate and timely action. She issued an eight-point safety directive to all executive agencies to prevent future occurrences of such incidents.
Expressing deep concern over safety lapses at excavation sites, the Chief Minister instructed strict adherence to safety standards and called for clear accountability among officials and contractors.
Meanwhile, new details from the FIR have revealed serious deficiencies in safety measures at the project site.
According to the FIR, the pit dug under the DJB project was left open on the main road without any warning signs, reflectors, barricades, lighting, or safety measures.
Inspections at the scene indicated that the incident occurred due to the DJB and its contractors’ failure to cover the pits on the main road, inadequate safety arrangements during excavation, and the absence of warning signs or proper lighting.
