Mumbai, March 14: In the realm of Hindi cinema, protagonists are often portrayed as brave and benevolent figures. However, Bollywood actor Abhay Deol has shattered this conventional image by embodying a character that diverges from the norm, yet remains authentic.
Abhay Deol is still widely recognized for his role in the film ‘Dev D’, which not only performed well at the box office but also captured the hearts of audiences. Born on March 15 into a film family, Deol has always expressed a disdain for the limelight and the entertainment industry. He began honing his acting skills in theater during his school years and had initially considered pursuing careers in acting, painting, philosophy, or journalism, ultimately choosing to act.
Few are aware that his father also attempted to make a name for himself on screen but did not achieve the same level of success as his younger brother, Dharmendra Deol.
Deol’s career took off with Imtiaz Ali’s film ‘Socha Na Tha’, followed by a role in ‘Oye Lucky! Lucky Oye!’. However, it was his performance in Anurag Kashyap’s ‘Dev D’ that truly established his identity as an actor. His portrayal was highly praised, and the film enjoyed significant box office success. Yet, the impact of this role extended into his personal life. He admitted that he began living like his character, Dev, from the film.
In an interview, Abhay Deol revealed that he was engulfed in alcoholism, struggling to separate himself from the character. Despite this, he formed meaningful friendships during that time. He shared that he drank heavily for a year and traveled to various places, but he did not adopt the shabby attire typical of his character. Only a few memories from that period remain with him.
It is noteworthy that ‘Dev D’ is based on Sarat Chandra Chattopadhyay’s novel ‘Devdas’. The film not only showcased Deol’s talent but also featured several female characters who won the hearts of fans.
