Mumbai, March 14: The ambitious PM Surya Ghar free electricity scheme by the central government is significantly promoting solar energy use in the Vasai-Virar area. With the rising demand for electricity, residents are increasingly installing solar panels on their rooftops.
According to data from Mahavitaran, 1,587 consumers in the Vasai region have installed solar panels, generating approximately 7.35 megawatts of electricity. The rapid development of the Vasai-Virar city, driven by new residential projects and a growing population, has led to a consistent increase in electricity demand.
Mahavitaran’s statistics indicate that the number of electricity consumers in this area is growing by about 9 to 10 percent annually. Currently, there are over 1.05 million electricity customers in the Vasai-Virar region. Meeting this rising demand has become a significant challenge for the electricity department. The PM Surya Ghar free electricity scheme was launched by the central government in February 2024, aiming to promote domestic solar energy production and enhance self-reliance in electricity.
Under this scheme, the government provides direct subsidies for installing solar energy projects on rooftops. Consumers receive ₹30,000 for a 1-kilowatt solar project, ₹60,000 for a 2-kilowatt project, and up to ₹78,000 for a 3-kilowatt project. Consumers are responsible for covering any additional costs. A 1-kilowatt solar project generates approximately 120 units of electricity monthly. If consumers generate more electricity than needed, their electricity bill can be reduced to zero, and they can earn income by selling excess electricity back to Mahavitaran.
Mahavitaran is continuously encouraging consumers to install solar energy projects on their rooftops. The increased use of solar energy will not only boost electricity production but also contribute significantly to environmental protection.
Sanjay Khandare, the supervising engineer at Mahavitaran, stated that the department is running ongoing awareness campaigns regarding solar energy projects. He noted that the response from consumers in the Vasai area has been positive, with over 1,500 consumers already generating electricity through solar panels. This number is expected to rise in the future.
Mahavitaran has urged citizens to take advantage of this scheme by installing solar energy projects on their rooftops, promoting both electricity savings and clean energy.
