New Delhi, 3 January. Renowned Indian female shooter Apurvi Chandela has won several medals for the country in the 10 metre air rifle event. She inherited this sport as a legacy. Apurvi set a new record at the 2014 Commonwealth Games by winning the gold medal, which brought new heights to her career.

Apurvi was born on 4 January 1993 in Jaipur to Kuldeep Singh Chandela and Bindu, who are associated with the hotel business. Her great-grandfather’s cousin, Dr. Karni Singh, was a coach and a five-time Olympian. The shooting range in New Delhi is also named after Karni Singh.

Apurvi’s father had an interest in shooting, but she initially wanted to become a sports journalist. After completing her early education in Ajmer and Jaipur, Apurvi graduated in Sociology from Jesus and Mary College, Delhi University.

In 2008, Abhinav Bindra’s gold medal win in shooting at the Beijing Olympics inspired Apurvi to pursue the sport seriously.

At the Jaipur shooting range, Apurvi impressed everyone with her precise shots. Seeing this, her father gifted her a rifle. Her uncle Hem Singh also built a shooting range at home to help her practice.

In 2012, Apurvi won the gold medal at the National Shooting Championship. She went on to win four medals at the 2014 Intershoot Championship. The same year, she created a new record by scoring 206.7 and won gold at the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow.

After winning a bronze medal at the 2015 World Cup, Apurvi qualified for the 2016 Rio Olympics, but she could not secure a medal for India.

In 2018, she won a bronze medal at the Asian Games. That year, she also won bronze medals at the Commonwealth and Asian Games. In 2019, Apurvi became world number one in the rankings. She won gold at the International Shooting Sport Federation World Cup with a score of 253.9. Apurvi secured a place in the 2020 Tokyo Olympics but again missed out on a medal.

For her outstanding contribution to shooting, Apurvi Chandela was honoured with the Arjuna Award in 2016. Undoubtedly, she has inspired many women to come forward in this sport.
