Kolkata, July 19: Authorities have arrested another suspect in connection with the house explosion that occurred in Rajarhat, on the outskirts of Kolkata, on Friday night. This brings the total number of arrests in the case to two. A minor and the landlord have also been detained for questioning. The investigation is now being handled by the National Investigation Agency (NIA).
The second suspect has been identified as Shahenshah, a broker accused of facilitating a rental agreement for the main suspect, Mohammad Shameem, using a fake identity. Shameem was apprehended on Saturday in Sodpur, located in the North 24 Parganas district.
According to police reports, Shahenshah was arrested after several hours of intensive questioning. Additionally, a minor and the landlord, Zulfiqar Ali, are currently in custody for further inquiries. Authorities are actively searching for another suspect believed to be involved in the incident.
The explosion occurred late Friday night in the Supari Bagan area of South Narayanpur in Rajarhat, injuring one individual. Upon receiving reports of the incident, local police arrived at the scene and initiated an investigation. Bomb disposal squads discovered two more live bombs at the site, prompting security agencies to heighten their alertness.
The case has since been transferred to the NIA for further investigation. A team of forensic experts has also arrived at the location to determine the actual cause and source of the explosion.
Investigations revealed that the house where the explosion took place belongs to Zulfiqar Ali. Police stated that Mohammad Shameem had rented the property through the broker Shahenshah just days prior to the incident.
Following the explosion, BJP MLA Piyush Kanodia visited the site on Saturday. He assured local residents of all possible assistance.
Kanodia expressed, “A climate of fear has been instilled in this entire area. Those who have governed here for years have ruined the region. We seek education, not terrorism. We do not want guns and machine guns in the hands of our youth; we want books and pens instead.”
