Chisinau, July 20: During President Murmu’s visit to Moldova, her counterpart, President Maia Sandu, hailed India as a reliable and significant friend. Sandu emphasized that India is the world’s largest democracy.
In a post on the social media platform ‘X’, President Sandu expressed her happiness in welcoming President Droupadi Murmu, noting that this is the first time an Indian head of state has visited Moldova. She stated, “India is the world’s largest democracy and an important friend. Together, we are building a partnership that will directly benefit the people of both countries.”
Amid growing global instability, Maia Sandu highlighted the importance of India-Moldova relations, stating that both democratic nations are united by shared values of freedom, respect, and the welfare of their people.
At a joint press conference with President Murmu, Sandu mentioned that Moldova is choosing the path of cooperation and trustworthy partnerships. She asserted that India and Moldova can strengthen their relationship based on their shared democratic values.
“We are both democratic countries. One is very large, and the other is small, but we uphold the same values of freedom, respect, and working for the welfare of our people. You will always find a reliable friend in Moldova,” she remarked.
President Murmu also visited the Moldovan Parliament, where she met with Parliament Speaker Igor Grosu and members of the India-Moldova Parliamentary Friendship Group.
During the meeting, President Murmu expressed confidence that the leaders of India and Moldova will continue to advance a strong, forward-looking, and mutually beneficial partnership between the two nations. This information was shared in a statement from the President’s Secretariat.
Cibi George, Secretary (West) at the Ministry of External Affairs, noted during a special media briefing about the President’s state visit that these meetings clearly indicate that parliamentary democracy plays a crucial role in enhancing mutual understanding, strengthening institutional relationships, and bringing both democratic societies closer together.
Moldova is the first stop on President Murmu’s three-country tour, which will also include North Macedonia and Romania, where several high-level meetings and events are scheduled.
