Another Arrest in Baruipur Mob Lynching Case, Total Arrests Rise to Eight

Kolkata, July 15: In a significant development in the mob lynching case following the alleged rape and murder of a 12-year-old girl in Baruipur, South 24 Parganas district, police arrested another suspect on Wednesday. This brings the total number of arrests in the case to eight.

The arrested individual has been identified as Sakim Laskar. He is set to be presented in the district court of South 24 Parganas, where the prosecution will seek his police custody.

A police officer from Baruipur district stated that during the investigation, several other individuals directly involved in the mob lynching have also been identified. Currently, these suspects are at large, and police are actively searching for them. The officer indicated that more arrests are likely in the coming days.

Previously arrested suspects face various charges under the Indian Penal Code (IPC), 2023, including unlawful assembly, rioting, obstruction of a public servant, intentional injury, and murder by mob lynching. The same charges will be applied to the newly arrested suspect.

It is noteworthy that during the police investigation, 26-year-old Indrajit Tanti was declared innocent in the alleged rape and murder case. Despite this, a mob brutally killed him.

Last week, opposition leader Suvendu Adhikari visited Baruipur and handed a compensation check of 2.5 million rupees to the victim’s family. He also announced a civic volunteer job for the victim’s elder brother in the state police. Additionally, he alleged that some individuals defeated in the recent West Bengal assembly elections were behind the mob lynching conspiracy.

The police have registered three separate cases concerning the Baruipur incident, each undergoing distinct investigations. The first case pertains to the alleged rape and murder of the 12-year-old girl. The second case involves the mob lynching of Indrajit Tanti, while the third case relates to violence, vandalism of railway tracks and police vehicles, and assaults on police personnel. So far, 42 individuals have been arrested in connection with the third case.

In the alleged rape and murder case, four suspects have been arrested. One of the suspects, Prabhas Mandal, was killed during a police encounter while attempting to escape from custody. According to police, he tried to seize a weapon from an escorting officer during his escape attempt.
