New Delhi, March 25: In response to escalating tensions in West Asia, Home Minister Amit Shah will preside over an all-party meeting on Wednesday evening at the Parliament complex. The primary aim of this meeting is to inform leaders about the regional crisis and its potential economic and security implications for India. Several ministers, including External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar, will participate in the discussions.
The meeting is scheduled for 5 PM inside the Parliament premises. Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri will provide a briefing on the current situation in West Asia. This meeting follows Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s recent speeches in Parliament, where he described the crisis as “unprecedented” with long-term consequences.
The conflict in West Asia has now entered its fourth week, significantly affecting maritime routes like the Strait of Hormuz. This situation has led to instability in the global energy market, raising concerns about supply chains and inflation. Consequently, the government has decided to enhance discussions with political parties.
Opposition parties, including Congress, have been demanding a comprehensive debate in Parliament. Leader of the Opposition in the Rajya Sabha, Mallikarjun Kharge, criticized the government’s decision to limit discussions to a briefing, arguing that a full debate is essential given the severity of the crisis.
Rahul Gandhi, the Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha, also accused the government of having a foreign policy driven by “compromise” and personal interests. While he welcomed the meeting, he will be unable to attend due to a prior commitment in Kerala.
A day before this meeting, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh conducted a high-level security review, which included Chief of Defence Staff General Anil Chauhan, heads of the three armed forces, and DRDO Chairman Dr. Samir Kamath among senior officials.
As regional tensions rise and their global impact becomes evident, this meeting could serve as a crucial platform for the government to explain the situation to opposition leaders and build broad political consensus on India’s stance.
