Guwahati, April 2: Union Home Minister Amit Shah launched a sharp attack on Congress while campaigning for Assam Gana Parishad (AGP) leader Keshav Mahanta in Nagaon on Thursday. He claimed that the last ten years of NDA governance have transformed Assam, contrasting it with the failures of previous Congress administrations.
Addressing a large public gathering in Nagaon, Shah paid tribute to Assam’s heritage and its great leaders and revolutionaries. He urged the public to ensure a hat-trick victory for the NDA in the upcoming assembly elections on April 9.
Shah asserted that the BJP-AGP alliance is robust, dismissing Congress’s claims of division as mere “Mungeri Lal ke Sapne” (fantasies). He accused Congress of neglecting Assam during its tenure.
He questioned, “What did Rahul Gandhi’s government achieve? Just ₹1.28 lakh crore?” He compared this to the significant financial support provided by Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s central government for development and infrastructure in the state.
Shah also alleged that Congress encouraged illegal immigration in Assam, while the NDA government stands with the local Muslim population, not illegal immigrants. He emphasized that the BJP-led government has worked for the development of all while protecting the identity and rights of local residents.
Highlighting achievements, he credited the NDA government, under former Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal and current Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, for ushering in a golden era for Assam.
He mentioned improvements in law and order, stating that the state is now free from “red terror.” Shah also referenced conservation efforts at Kaziranga National Park, noting the NDA government’s crucial role in protecting the one-horned rhinoceros.
He criticized Congress for failing to honor Assam’s great personalities, stating that Gopinath Bordoloi and Bhupen Hazarika were awarded the Bharat Ratna under the BJP government, not during Congress rule.
Emphasizing the unity of the alliance, Shah said, “Wherever there is an elephant, consider it a lotus; wherever there is a lotus, consider it an elephant,” urging voters to see the AGP (elephant) and BJP (lotus) as one.
