Amit Shah Advocates for Uniform Civil Code After Gujarats Historic Bill Passage

New Delhi, March 25: In a significant move, Gujarat has become the second BJP-ruled state to pass the Uniform Civil Code (UCC) bill, following Uttarakhand. Union Home Minister Amit Shah expressed his satisfaction, stating that the country should operate under uniform laws for all citizens. This, he emphasized, is both a priority and a commitment for the government.

In a post on the social media platform ‘X’, Shah remarked, “Having a uniform law for every citizen has been the BJP’s pledge since its inception. Under Modi’s leadership, BJP state governments are consistently progressing in this direction.”

He further added, “I am pleased that after Uttarakhand, Gujarat has also accomplished the historic task of passing the UCC bill, demonstrating its commitment. I congratulate Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel and all the legislators who supported this bill.”

Shah reiterated in his post that the nation should not operate on the basis of appeasement but should instead uphold uniform laws for all citizens, which remains a priority and commitment.

The Gujarat Assembly passed the UCC bill after a debate lasting over seven hours on Tuesday. Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel introduced the bill in the house. With this passage, Gujarat joins Uttarakhand as the second state in the country to adopt the UCC, with Uttarakhand being the first to pass the bill in February 2024.

The ‘Gujarat Uniform Civil Code, 2026’ law will be implemented across the state. However, the bill clearly states that this code will not apply to members of Scheduled Tribes (ST) and certain groups whose traditional rights are protected under the Constitution.
