AMC Continues Massive Encroachment Removal Drive in Vatwa

Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) launched a large-scale encroachment removal drive near Bandervat (Vanarvat) pond in the Vatwa area on Tuesday. The operation began early morning with a significant deployment of police personnel to maintain law and order during the action.

Teams from the police, municipal corporation, and administration remained vigilant throughout the operation, coordinating closely to prevent any untoward incidents. Heavy machinery such as JCBs and Hitachi excavators were extensively used to expedite the demolition process effectively.

According to AMC officials, the targeted area falls under the water body zone. Over the years, illegal constructions have severely disrupted the natural water system, leading to increased waterlogging and sanitation issues in the surrounding localities. To address this, the corporation initiated strict measures to clear approximately 430 residential houses and nearly 30 commercial structures.

The officials explained that around 58,000 square meters, including 28,000 square meters of the pond area and adjoining regions near TP Road, will be freed from encroachments. The demolition involved about 10 large Hitachi excavators and 5 to 10 JCB machines, equipped with different types of buckets to dismantle even robust structures swiftly. Eight teams and nearly 500 police personnel were deployed to ensure smooth execution.

Deputy YMC B.C. Parmar stated that the demolition is part of a project to connect Mahalaxmi, Ropad, and Vanarvat lakes. This initiative aims to reduce water pressure in the area and alleviate waterlogging during the monsoon. The preliminary survey identified 430 residential and approximately 25 to 30 commercial properties built illegally in this zone.

Parmar further clarified that under AMC policy, residents who have valid documents and have been living in the area since before 2010 will be provided alternate housing. Application forms are being collected from eligible individuals to facilitate suitable arrangements.

Assistant Municipal Commissioner Yatendra Nayak emphasized that the entire area belongs to the pond and any unauthorized construction in a water body is against public interest. He assured that necessary demolitions are essential and that shelter homes accommodating 300 to 400 families are ready for those facing immediate difficulties. Food and other facilities are also being provided at these shelters.

Nayak added that if required, transportation will be arranged to help people reach these shelter homes, ensuring no inconvenience. The large teams, police force, and heavy machinery aim to complete the entire operation within one day.
