Eugene, August 6: Indian thrower Amanat Kamboj has qualified for the women’s discus throw final at the U20 World Athletics Championship, achieving her best throw of the season on Thursday.
In May 2026, Amanat secured a gold medal at the Asian U20 Championship with a throw of 52.24 meters. During the qualification round, she recorded a throw of 52.58 meters, placing her sixth among the world’s top U20 throwers. The women’s discus throw final is scheduled for Saturday.
Amanat is the third Indian to qualify for the javelin throw final. Previously, Ashish Yadav and T. Dharanidharan had already secured spots in the men’s javelin throw final.
Ashish topped his group with a best throw of 69.87 meters, while Dharanidharan qualified with a throw of 68.07 meters, finishing second and twelfth overall in the qualification round, respectively.
South Africa‘s U20 javelin champion Jan-Hendrik Hemmens made a remarkable start in Eugene, achieving an automatic qualifying mark of 76.02 meters with his first throw. Behind him, three athletes, including India’s Ashish (69.87 meters), Poland’s Aleksander Wojna (69.80 meters), and China’s Yang Zhaoyi (69.80 meters), also surpassed the 69-meter mark, promising a competitive final.
In the men’s 800 meters, Moghli Venkataram secured third place in his heat with a time of 1:52.81, advancing to the semifinals, while Uvin Anand posted a better time of 1:52.37.
The mixed 4×400 meter relay team (Piyush Raj, Tahura Khatun, Syed Sabir, and Theia Arumugam) achieved their best season time of 3:22.85 but did not qualify for the final, finishing outside the top nine.
The World Athletics U20 Championship 2026 is being held at Hayward Field in Oregon from August 5 to 9, featuring a 36-member Indian track and field team.
