Suva, October 8 (Daily Kiran) : India is firmly committed to advancing the positive outcomes from the recent Pre-COP meeting in Fiji to the upcoming climate summit in Turkey. Environment Minister Bhupender Yadav made this announcement on Thursday in Suva. He emphasized India’s readiness to collaborate with all parties during COP31, where India will hold the presidency.
The Pre-COP discussions, which concluded in Nadi, Fiji, focused on building consensus ahead of the COP31 conference scheduled for next month in Antalya, Turkey. Yadav stated that the aim is to carry the constructive aspects of these discussions to Turkey. Over several days, bilateral and multilateral talks aimed at achieving consensus for COP31 were conducted.
In a post-meeting statement, Yadav remarked, “Our purpose is clear as we leave Fiji: to take the positive outcomes of these discussions to Antalya. Through meaningful and constructive dialogue, we have made significant progress towards consensus for COP31.”
During the discussions in Fiji, the focus was on identifying a ‘political landing zone and outcomes.’ Yadav called for greater flexibility, practicality, and mutual respect from all parties to resolve outstanding differences under the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) at COP31.
Highlighting the urgent need for action in the face of escalating climate change impacts, Yadav stressed that it is time to move beyond discussions and implement effective solutions. He expressed hope that COP31 would pave the way for increased engagement, technical cooperation, and targeted support for capacity building.
Yadav also expressed India’s openness to transparent dialogue ahead of COP31 to ensure a balanced, fair, and historic outcome for the global community, particularly for those most affected by climate change.
According to the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change, Yadav emphasized strengthening climate multilateralism through an inclusive, consultative, and consensus-based approach at COP31. He concluded by thanking Chris Bowen, Australia’s Minister for Climate Change and Energy, for ensuring open and meaningful discussions during Pre-COP31 and wished him success for the upcoming summit.
Earlier in the day, Yadav met with Bowen to reaffirm India’s commitment to engaging constructively with the COP31 presidency and working towards an ambitious and balanced outcome at the climate summit.
