Poonch, October 8 (Daily Kiran) : The Indian Army discovered and safely destroyed a landmine on October 8 near the Line of Control (LOC) in the Mendhar sub-division of Poonch district, Jammu and Kashmir. This landmine was found during routine patrols in the forward area of Balakot, with a bomb disposal team quickly dispatched to handle the situation.
Landmines are strategically placed in forward areas to prevent infiltration. However, heavy rains can displace them, leading to potential hazards. On October 5, two additional landmines were found near the border fence at Basuni Top in the Mendhar sector. These were neutralized without incident by the army’s bomb disposal unit.
The use of landmines in these areas is intended to enhance security. Yet, severe weather can cause them to drift from their original locations. In mountainous regions, wildfires can trigger explosions in old or displaced landmines, posing risks to patrolling security personnel and local residents.
Authorities have advised locals, particularly children and farmers, to avoid any unfamiliar or displaced metallic objects and to report such findings immediately to the nearest security post or police station. Recent community awareness initiatives, such as the Police Community Partnership Group meeting held in Balakot, have emphasized safe handling practices for suspicious items.
To address the threats of infiltration and manage explosives, security measures have been heightened. This includes increased drone surveillance and patrols in forested areas to ensure community safety.
