Chandigarh, September 12 (Daily Kiran) : Leaders from the Akali Dal have expressed their discontent regarding recent changes to the postgraduate history syllabus at Punjab University in Chandigarh. The university has reportedly removed four papers related to Punjab’s history, prompting concerns among various political figures.
Daljit Singh Cheema, a senior leader of the Akali Dal and former education minister, took to the social media platform X to voice his apprehensions. He stated that the removal of these papers is a serious issue for Punjabis and those dedicated to preserving the region’s rich historical legacy.
In his post, Cheema highlighted the significance of Punjab’s history in academic studies, insisting it should be honored and maintained. He mentioned that he raised this issue with the Vice Chancellor and the head of the history department at Punjab University. Cheema received assurances that the decision would be reconsidered and the original syllabus reinstated. He welcomed this promise and urged university officials to avoid making similar decisions in the future, as they carry deep cultural and historical significance for the people of Punjab.
Earlier, Congress leader Sukhpinder Singh Khaira also criticized the syllabus changes on X. He condemned what he described as an alteration of Sikh and Punjab history by the RSS-backed BJP government, which he believes undermines the region’s glorious past and the sacrifices made by its leaders. Khaira called for the restoration of the original syllabus to ensure that future generations are well-informed about their history.
