New Delhi, September 12 (Daily Kiran) : Iranian President Payeshkian met with Indian President Droupadi Murmu on Saturday at the Rashtrapati Bhavan in New Delhi. The two leaders engaged in discussions focused on India-Iran relations, trade, regional cooperation, and mutual interests.
Payeshkian is in India to attend the BRICS summit, which is set to take place in the National Capital Region. Upon his arrival at the airport, he was welcomed by Union Minister Shantanu Thakur.
The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) highlighted the strong cultural ties between India and Iran, emphasizing the friendly relationship that binds the two nations. According to the BRICS Metropolitan report, both countries are committed to contributing to shared progress and prosperity.
On Friday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi also met with Payeshkian, stressing the need for stable peace and resilience in West Asia. During discussions at the BRICS committee in New Delhi, Modi underscored the importance of navigation freedom, trade security, and the welfare of seafarers.
This meeting marks the second encounter between the two leaders in less than two weeks; they previously met on August 31 in Bishkek during the SCO committee session. Modi expressed gratitude towards Iran for its consistent and high-level participation in BRICS meetings, despite challenging circumstances.
The Prime Minister referenced BRICS’s potential to foster infrastructure, innovation, cooperation, and stability among Global South nations. The MEA noted that Modi thanked President Payeshkian for participating in the leaders’ session of the BRICS Business Forum.
Following their discussions, a statement issued by the MEA indicated that the leaders reviewed recent events in West Asia. Modi reiterated India’s stance that stability should be achieved through dialogue and diplomacy, emphasizing the need for peace, trade freedom, and the safety of maritime personnel.
The statement further noted that Modi included BRICS in discussions involving prestigious initiatives supported by a majority of allies. India is hosting the 18th BRICS summit during the Bharat Mahotsav on September 12-13, with a theme centered on “Innovation for Construction, Cooperation, and Stability.”
