Ajmer, September 5 (Kiran News) — Panic gripped several areas of Ajmer late Thursday night after the embankment of Boraj Lake gave way, sending gushing water into residential colonies. The incident occurred around 11:15 pm, flooding nearly 1,000 houses in Swastik Nagar, Bharat Nagar, Rawat Nagar, Jyoti Nagar, SS Colony, and along Foy Sagar Road.

Residents were forced to climb rooftops with their families to escape the rising water, which damaged several homes due to its strong current. The water surged uncontrollably up to Foy Sagar Road, about 1.5 km from the lake.

Emergency response teams from Civil Defence, SDRF, the Municipal Corporation, Ajmer Development Authority (ADA), and the district administration rushed to the spot. People were evacuated using tractors and other vehicles. Many women and children were seen in tears amid the chaos.

District Collector Lok Bandhu, who inspected the site, confirmed that there was no loss of life and said the situation was now under control. Authorities had earlier flagged the risk of erosion in the embankment. As a precaution, about 80 houses in Swastik Nagar were evacuated on Thursday afternoon, with affected families shifted to a nearby government school where food and shelter arrangements were made.

By Friday morning, water levels had receded significantly. According to Hathikheda Gram Panchayat Sarpanch Lalsingh Rawat, conditions were returning to normal, though Swastik Nagar still had waterlogging. Pumping operations are underway to clear the area. Around 20 people remain housed at Boraj School, while others have moved in with relatives and friends.

The floodwaters left behind heavy silt deposits inside homes, creating further difficulties for residents. Thick layers of mud covered rooms, while collapsed walls and damaged houses added to the destruction.
