Air India Enhances Pilot Testing for Passenger Safety

New Delhi, August 18: Air India announced on Tuesday that it has implemented additional voluntary testing for all pilots, exceeding regulatory requirements. This initiative is part of the airline’s commitment to passenger safety, according to a statement released by the airline.

The airline emphasized that all pilot testing is ongoing and urged all stakeholders and media to refrain from believing any unverified information or reports.

In a statement, the airline said, “Under our unwavering commitment to safety and professionalism, Air India has initiated a voluntary testing program for all pilots that goes beyond regulatory needs.”

The airline further requested that media and other concerned parties avoid speculation or reporting based on unconfirmed or unfounded information, as the process is still underway.

Additionally, reports indicate that two more Air India pilots failed initial drug tests conducted earlier this week. These tests were part of a larger screening program initiated after an incident on a flight from Phuket to Delhi.

According to an NDTV report citing sources, the final test results are still pending, and both pilots have been removed from duty until confirmation is received.

The Tata Group-owned airline has mandated drug testing for all pilots under a new Standard Operating Procedure (SOP). This decision was made following the revelation that the pilot-in-command of the Phuket-Delhi flight failed two urine tests after landing.

Moreover, reports suggest that marijuana was found in their systems.

To date, over 300 Air India pilots have undergone this testing. However, it typically takes 24 to 48 hours for the final results of drug tests to be processed.
