Ranchi, June 16: In a significant health initiative under Operation Drishti, a specialized eye surgical team from the Indian Army and Indian Air Force has launched a mega advanced surgical eye camp at the Military Hospital in Namkum, Ranchi.
This camp, running from June 15 to June 19, aims to restore vision for over 200 beneficiaries and enhance their quality of life through free advanced eye surgeries.
Led by Brigadier Dr. Sanjay Kumar Mishra, a consultant and head of the ophthalmology department at the Army Hospital (Research and Referral) in New Delhi, the surgical team will perform various advanced eye procedures. These include phacoemulsification for cataracts, minimally invasive glaucoma surgery (MIGS), and anti-VEGF intravitreal injections for vitreoretinal diseases.
Comprehensive screenings are ongoing for ex-servicemen, dependents, and underprivileged citizens, with a large turnout expected during the camp. To support the mission, world-class medical equipment has been airlifted to Ranchi using Indian Air Force service aircraft, enabling the provision of specialized surgical care in the region.
Vice Admiral Aarti Sareen, Director General of Armed Forces Medical Services, emphasized the significance of this humanitarian mission. She stated that it exemplifies the dual identity of the army as both a loyal guardian of the nation’s borders and a compassionate creator of social resilience.
Operation Drishti is a major outreach program that combines advanced eye expertise with humanitarian service. Prior to Ranchi, this initiative successfully conducted eight advanced surgical eye camps across the country, including locations like Leh-Ladakh, Lakshadweep, Bhuj, Kutch, and Bagdogra, delivering specialized eye care to remote and underserved areas.
