Abu Azmi Criticizes Uniform Civil Code Implementation in Gujarat

Mumbai, March 25: Abu Azmi, a senior leader of the Samajwadi Party (SP), has voiced strong objections to the implementation of the Uniform Civil Code (UCC) in Gujarat. This makes Gujarat the second state to adopt the UCC after Uttarakhand. Speaking to the media in Mumbai, Azmi expressed that the law is not acceptable to them.

He stated that criminal law should be equal for everyone, regardless of their religion. However, he emphasized that certain practices are unique to each faith. For instance, he noted that marriage customs differ in South India and among Muslims.

Azmi highlighted that, according to the Quran, Muslims have specific guidelines for property distribution. He believes that interfering in these religious practices is inappropriate. “This is an intrusion into religion,” he said. He criticized the government for pushing legislation based on majority power, calling it an injustice. While laws may change over time, he argued that interfering in the constitution of religion is unacceptable.

Regarding the newly enacted law, Azmi remarked that it remains to be seen how it will be applied, particularly since it excludes many tribal communities. Thus, he reiterated that they do not support this law.

In relation to the FIR filed in Karnataka regarding the plane crash involving former Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar, Azmi expressed his satisfaction and congratulated Rohit Pawar for his efforts. He lamented that a significant leader like Ajit Pawar has not faced an FIR in Maharashtra, raising questions about the reasons behind this. “If it was a natural accident, then so be it. But if an investigation clarifies the situation, then what is wrong with that?” he asked.

He also commented on the notice to vacate 24 Akbar Road, stating it is unfortunate that a major party like Congress is unable to withstand pressure from the BJP. He criticized the arrogance of power, asserting that such actions are entirely wrong.
