Abhishek Banerjees Aide Sumit Roy Arrested Following Supreme Court Ruling

Kolkata, September 10 (Daily Kiran) : The Criminal Investigation Department (CID) of West Bengal police arrested Sumit Roy, the personal aide to Trinamool Congress General Secretary and Diamond Harbour MP Abhishek Banerjee, on Thursday. This arrest occurred in Salboni, West Midnapore, in connection with an alleged land scam involving millions of rupees.

Roy’s arrest came just hours after the Supreme Court revoked his interim relief from any punitive action, including arrest. The court noted that despite being given opportunities, Roy had not cooperated adequately with the investigation.

Upon learning of the Supreme Court’s decision, a CID team arrived at Banerjee’s residence in Kalighat, South Kolkata, where Roy was located. Sources indicated that Roy’s private security personnel attempted to prevent the CID from entering the premises, leading to a brief altercation. However, the CID officials, accompanied by police, eventually gained entry and took Roy into custody.

He was subsequently transported to the CID headquarters, Bhawani Bhavan, for questioning. A senior police officer stated that Roy is likely to be presented in a West Midnapore court either late Thursday or Friday, where the CID will seek his police custody.

Roy is identified as the main accused in the Salboni land scam case. His anticipatory bail plea was previously rejected by the Calcutta High Court, prompting him to appeal to the Supreme Court.

The case was heard by a bench comprising Chief Justice Suryakant, Justice Joymalya Bagchi, and Justice Venkata Subba Rao Mohana. With the interim relief lifted, there are no legal barriers to his arrest by the investigative agency.

This arrest comes at a time when Abhishek Banerjee is abroad for eye treatment.
