Kolkata, June 16: Abhishek Banerjee, the General Secretary of the Trinamool Congress and Lok Sabha MP, will appear at the headquarters of the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) of West Bengal Police in Bhawani Bhavan, South Kolkata, on Tuesday. This case is linked to allegations of threatening Union Home Minister Amit Shah and inciting violence ahead of the recent assembly elections in the state.
Last month, an FIR was filed against Abhishek Banerjee at the Bidhannagar Cyber Crime Police Station under Bidhannagar City Police. Initially, the Cyber Crime Police were investigating the matter, but on June 11, the case was handed over to the CID.
CID officials issued a notice to Banerjee on June 12, requesting his presence at the headquarters by Tuesday afternoon for questioning.
In the past two days, on June 14 and 15, Abhishek faced extensive questioning from two different investigative agencies regarding his alleged involvement in two other cases. On Sunday, CID officials interrogated him for nearly eight and a half hours concerning a case of forgery related to signatures on a proposal to appoint Shovandev Chattopadhyay as the leader of the opposition in the state assembly. Discrepancies in the submitted documents prompted the CID to initiate this investigation.
Then, on June 15, he underwent over 11 hours of questioning by officials from the Enforcement Directorate (ED) at their Salt Lake office in the northern outskirts of Kolkata, regarding a cash-for-school-jobs scandal.
Abhishek Banerjee has claimed that such prolonged and continuous questioning is part of the Bharatiya Janata Party’s ‘vendetta’ politics, aimed at establishing a politically opposition-free environment in the state. He also stated that he would cooperate with all investigations initiated against him but would not succumb to any pressure.
